Lake of Egypt is a beautiful place to live and enjoy all the pleasures of lake living in a modern community - The Best of Both Worlds. It features improved roads, easy access to major highways and interstates (I-57 and I-24), a regional airport just 10 miles away, municipal water and sewer systems, a fire department, ambulance service, golf course, excellent school systems with 5 junior colleges and 2 universities within a 100 mile radius. All this as well as hiking, boating, water skiing, camping, fishing, biking, golfing, and more. Lake of Egypt was created in 1961 when the Southern Illinois Power Cooperative (SIPC) constructed a dam on the South fork of the Saline River to provide cooling water for a coal-fired generating plant for the purpose of making low-cost energy available for the distribution to small communities and rural areas in the 17 counties of Southern Illinois. 
Lake of Egypt covers 2,300 acres. It has 93 miles of shoreline. The average depth is 18 feet with the deepest point being 47 feet. The lake is privately owned by SIPC; the waters and shoreline may be used subject to the Official Lake of Egypt Rules and Regulations.
